Why do we highlight? Is it as important as contouring? YES, YES, YES.
Go dig inside your makeup bag. Somewhere in there is probably a tube/compact labeled “highlighter”. You may have used highlighter to make your skin glow like a Kardashian because that’s what they use, right? Well, yes and no.
Highlighter is to attract light, it creates the illusion of brightness and height. Celebs, like the Kardashians, use highlighter in addition to contouring to often lift an push features back. Contouring is an art in itself, but you don't need to master that in order to use highlighter.
Here are 3 key tips on how to apply highlighter:
When choosing the perfect highlighter, use the gold versus silver jewelry test.
If you tend to wear gold earrings look for highlighters that have a warm bronze, gold or copper tonality.
If you tend to wear silver earrings look for highlighters that has flecks of silver or pale pink in it.
A warm-pink is neutral and works on most people.
Use a brush instead of your fingers in order to create a flawless finish.
For more control, use a brush instead of fingers.
Larger areas of the face such as your cheeks, use a flat, slightly-angled brush
Smaller areas use a soft and dense blender brush.
Highlighter can make you look more youthful when it's applied in all the right places.
If you use highlighter all over, you are defeating the purpose of it. When your whole face has highlight it therefore will ALL be illuminated and you won't show off specific features.
TOO MUCH WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOOK LIKE YOU ARE SWEATING, NOT GLOWING!
Main Places to Highlight:
To look higher, use highlighter on the top just off to the side of under-eye area.
Keep highlighter a fingers’ width away from the eye. When it's too close, it will settle into any laugh lines and will end up accentuating them!
To make them look bigger or brighter.
Apply it around your tear duct or dotted onto the center of your eyelids!
For instant brow lift.
Dab highlighter under the arch of your eyebrows!
For a slimmer nose.
Swipe it down the center of the bridge!
For the bigger/poutier lips.
Applying it in the bow of your lips.
